Man in fox costume

The Fox is Herod Antipas. Jesus says so. If you don鈥檛 believe me, look at Luke 13:32.[1]

But what does this arrogant, sensual, and power-hungry tyrant say?

Maybe we should ask first: what does The Prophet (John the Baptist) say to The Fox?

The Prophet鈥攕peaking as the mouthpiece of the Lord鈥攕ays to The Fox: 鈥淚t is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.鈥 (Mark 6:18)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淟ock that man up in prison!鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淚鈥檓 afraid of the crowd.鈥 (Matthew 14:3-5)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淚鈥檓 not letting that man out of prison!鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淚鈥檓 afraid of this guy; it鈥檚 obvious he鈥檚 a man of God.鈥 (Mark 6:20)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淚 want to hear what John says.鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淭here鈥檚 no way I鈥檓 going to do what God tells me to do.鈥 (Mark 6:20)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淚 can do whatever I want with my fantasies.鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淭hese desires are getting out of control.鈥 (Mark 6:17-18; 22-23)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淚鈥檝e made a public promise; I will fulfill my promise. Bring me the head of John the Baptist on a platter!鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淲hat a stupid, rash oath I鈥檝e uttered! But I鈥檒l look weak if I don鈥檛 follow through.鈥 (Mark 6:21-28)

What does The Fox say?

鈥淗as John the Baptist come back from the dead?鈥 What he鈥檚 probably thinking鈥攂ut doesn鈥檛 say aloud is: 鈥淥h no! I鈥檓 terrified of the spirit world; I don鈥檛 want to be tormented for all the evil things I鈥檝e done!" (Mark 6:14-16)

What does The Fox say?

Forget about The Fox.

What does Jesus say? That is always the most important question.

What does Jesus say to The Fox on the final day of Jesus鈥 earthly life鈥攁t the moment when Jesus is brought before The Fox during the 鈥渢rial鈥 that will lead to his crucifixion? Absolutely nothing. Jesus is unwilling to speak a single word to The Fox (Luke 23:9). The Fox, who consciously, pompously, and repeatedly鈥攄espite his personal fears鈥攕purns God鈥檚 command, receives nothing but silence on the day he comes face to face with the Son of God.

This post was intended to get us to think about what drives us. We live in a day when people鈥檚 primary drives are found in the domains of power, sensuality, fear, and the striving for self-actualization鈥攍ike The Fox. Instead may our posture toward God鈥檚 truth be that of humility, purity, faith, and submission.

[1] Luke 13:31-32: Just at that time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, 鈥淕o away, leave here, for Herod wants to kill you.鈥 And he said to them, 鈥淕o and tell that fox, 鈥楤ehold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I reach my goal.鈥欌
